The letter in which Sultan Yakub informed Sultan Bayezid Han of the murder of Sheikh Haydar and Sultan Bayezid Han’s reply to Sultan Yakub

This study consists of a letter from Sultan Yakub, found in Feridun Bey, Mecmua-yı Münşeatü’s-Selâtîn, Volume I, reporting the murder of Sheikh Haydar, and the response to this letter from Sultan Bayezid II. The Akkoyunlu sultan, Sheikh Yakub, was Sheikh Haydar’s brother-in-law and the son-in-law of Ferruh Bey, the sultan of the Shirvanshahs. Sheikh Haydar fought against his brother-in-law and his father-in-law. This was because Sheikh Haydar had declared war with the intention and aim of avenging his father, Sheikh Cüneyd, from the Shirvanshahs. Upon this, the Shirvanshahs’ ruler, Sultan Ferruh Yesâr, requested assistance from Sultan Yakub, his son-in-law, in his war against Sheikh Haydar. Thus, Sultan Yakub, who aided Sultan Ferruh Yesâr, fought against Sheikh Haydar. Sheikh Haydar was killed on the battlefield at Derbend in the year 893 AH (1488 AD) during the war against the armies of the Akkoyunlu ruler Sultan Yakub and Shirvanshah Ferruh Yesâr. Sheikh Haydar’s father, Sheikh Cüneyd, had also been killed on the battlefield by Shirvanshah Sultan Halil on 4 March 1460. Sultan Yakub sent a letter to Sultan Bayezid Han informing him that he had killed Sheikh Haydar on the battlefield. The letter sent by Sultan Yakub is found in Feridun Bey, Mecmua-yı Münşeatü’s-Selâtîn, Volume I, pp. 302-304, and Sultan II. Bayezid’s reply to Sultan Yakub is found in Feridun Bey, Mecmua-yı Münşeatü’s-Selâtîn, Volume I, pp. 304-35.
